my fall looks

My latest fall looks. Do you have any favorites?

Even bikkelen dus!

Now that everything here is covered in snow, the fall has officially ended in Umea! Last Friday we woke up in Winter Wonderland and that weekend it snowed even more. Last night is froze about -20C so there is no denying it anymore. I'm super stoked that the snow is finally here because now it looks way lighter outside. Here in the North we have really short days; the sun starts setting around 2 PM! I already started taking vitamin pills because when the sun is down, my energy is also gone and I get nothing done. Let's hope those vitamins start doing there job soon! :-)

I'm pretty busy with school BTW. In the end of next week I have my exam in Tumor Biology and we get questioned about the whole book so there is a lot to study. Also, it's almost Thanksgiving so we are going to M's family in Nordmaling to celebrate it there. I have no clue how you celebrate Thanksgiving though.. Is everyone all dressed up just like with Xmas or can I show up in my jeans? Are you suppose to go to church? Do we buy presents for each other? Haha, Thanksgiving is totally new for me so I guess I need to do a background check.

pictures of the beautiful snow coming soon! <3

Post nr 200: Recap of my blog history

Time is flying by so fast.. When I was 15 I first experienced fashion and beauty blogs and since then my passion for that only increased. After that I always wanted to start my own blog because and I was really jealous of the girls who dared to expose themselves on the web. They looked so confident and that really inspired me. With time I also got more confident and I really loved expressing myself through my choice of clothes and makeup. At a certain moment I was over it, over that stupid shyness and low self-esteem. "Just do it, f*** it" is what I thought & Esmee's Beauty Lab was born!

The first time

I still remember the very first outfit pictures that I took. My friend Vera and me went to the movies in Rotterdam to watch "The Heat" (my god, funniest movie EVER). Beforehand we agreed to take pictures so we could blog about it. I still remember how awkward I felt when I was posing in the middle of the street, haha. Luckily it was in Rotterdam so nothing there is crazy so nobody seemed to be shocked by us. Here is the picture of that very first time:

I think I was 18 or 19 here. I just got my drivers license and we drove to Rotterdam. The freedom felt so good!!

Insperation

Here a picture of the blogger that inspired me the most, Kenza Zouiten. She was (and still is) my bestie on the web. She writes in a way that you feel really connected to her. She is really open and honest and that is what makes her so real. Haha, have you ever seen some of her video's? I think something might be wrong with her... :p Anyways, it would be a dream coming true if I could ever meet her in real life one day (Bucket list thingy). I would really like to thank her for all that self-lovin' and confidence that she send through her blog to the little shy Esmee. Eventhough we don't know eachother, she feels like a real friend. Guess how I got that weird obsession with Sweden? ;-) (ehh, I really sound like a teengirl with a crush on Harry Styles)

My design through the years
Oordeel zelf! Hier zijn mijn banners:

Of course my blog had to look good and well taken care of. I started out with a simple design with flowers at the top of my page. To be honest, I didn't knew yet how everything worked so for then that seemed like a good solution. ;-) After that I got a better idea. I saw on other blogs how they did their design and I decided to make a real banner. After that first banner came another one, and another one and another one! Hahaha, curious how much progress I made with my desgin skills? I'll let you be the judge of that! Here are my banners:

20 year old Esmee

22 year old Esmee

Do you see the pattern too?

After all these years my love for black and white hasn't changed a thing! Here are some pictures of my first year as a "blogger" when I still blogged anonymous. All these pictures were taken with a simple digital camera. Gosh, I was so happy when my friends gave me a real camera at my goodbye-party. Really the best present I could have wished for at that moment, I'm so thankful! And yes, I miss my black faux fur (my mom didn't like it so much haha, because faux furs weren't realling a thing back then).

Pride

Which post am I the most proud of? Hmm.. On each post actually! Everytime I get a little bit better and professional. I'm glad that all my practice is paying off now bit by bit and that I get nice picturees because good pictures are key. I must say that I'm still super happy with the pictures that my friend Tessa took of me (check her portfolio here). When I still lived in the Netherlands M wasn't there of course so I didn't had anyone to regularly take pictures of me. So Tessie helped me out and it was so much fun! Miss u Tes! To see all the pictures Tessa took of me, click here for the blog post.

I must admit that M isn't bad either! I'm super happy that he likes to help me, his sometimes nagging girlfriend, out by taking the pictures. The pictures he took from when we were at the Kinderdijk I really really like. Click here to see the whole post.

Last summer in Holland. M and me were visiting the windmilles at Kinderdijk

Most memorable moments on the blog
Jep, in Zweden. <3

Since I started my blog I experienced quite some fun stuff. If I would have to pick a post that really meant a lot for me at that time, than it is this one (click). Not because the pictures were so nice or it was a super glamorous post, but because me and my friend Roxan were about to do something far outside our comfort zone. In this post I announced that we were gonna study abroad for half a year. Yep, in Sweden. Well I can tell you, that half a year sure changed my life haha! A lot of good things came from this experience and I'm super happy that I took the big step, but I couldn't have done it without my sister from another mister Roxie. <3

And yes, I saw the Northen lights while I was on exchange! Oh, and another 7 times the last two months. Don't mean to brag... ;-p

Well, that was it! I hope that you liked reading the recap. It was really fun to write and I enjoyed it very much. You don't even notice sometimes that you are collecting these valuable memories and looking at these pictures makes the memories all come back. I'm wondering what memories I will make in the future!

Hold back the river

Pants, blouse, bag - H&M / top - Brandy Melville / shoes - old / necklace - Glitter

Okay, hair is outta control! <3

Oke, laten we nu over iets positief praten! :D

Okay, hair is outta control! I need a haircut ASAP! Okay, enough about the hair already, I dedicated a whole post to my hair last week, haha.. This week didn't really start great. I felt a bit sick on Sunday and on Monday it got a bit worse. Luckily it wasn't anything crazy and I feel a lot better now. Maybe I felt sick after hearing these horrific stories about the attacks in Paris, because it really made my stomach turn. I just  hope that we can end all this hating and stupid bullshit. I feel extremely lucky that me and my loved ones are safe and life is treating us good because this shows again that freedom and wealth is not to be taken for granted. <3

Okay, let's talk about something positive! I can say that I made some progress in my life (sounds so serious..). The people who know me, know that I'm not a morning person and that I have major trouble with getting up early and eating breakfast before I leave the house. With my new course "Tumor Biology" I have to start 9.00 AM every single day! So I challenged myself to get my **** together and work on my morning routine. Later in life when I'm gonna start working I need to be able to show up on my work and be well prepared and ready for the day. It feels a bit like a really dumb thing that a big girl like me doesn't even have the willpower to get out of bed. So: I go to bed on time, I have a new alarm and I'm only allowed to snooze once. AND TODAY IT HAPPEND! I had time for breakfast!!! Haha, it feels like such a victory! :D

pray for the world

What an awful news, how can people be so cruel? Friday the 13th really turned into hell. Terrorism has never been so close and it's frighting. Unfortunately this type of violence is reality for so many people on this world and the reason why they run away and leave everything behind. We should not turn our backs on them after attacks like the one in Paris. Instead we should all unite and make this world a place where everybody can get along regardless of religion, ideology and other differences. It's time to stop hating each other.

I'm sending my love and strength to all the people around the world effected by terrorism and violence. <3 <3

throwback to my short hair

Picture of spring 2014

Laat het me weten! :-)

Almost two years ago I cut off my long locks and went short. I liked it in the beginning but I started to miss my long hair. My hair really needed something to bring it back to life because it was super dead and ugly so in the end it was the right decision to make. It's better to have healthy and short hair then ugly and long hair. Now I'm back to long hair again but my hair is definitely not as healthy as on this picture. I guess long hair is just harder to take good care of. Right now I'm trying coconut oil as treatments for my hair and I must say that it's making my hair a lot shinier and softer (like any oil would do I guess) but those dead end just can't be saved! Guess I'm making an appointment at a hair salon sometime soon. Maaaaaaybe Christmas is coming soon this year so how about making an appointment at Rapunzel of Sweden? (heavy breathing - YASSS..)

Anyone has some reviews on Rapunzel of Sweden and maybe experience with having human hair extensions? If I'm getting extensions I most prob will get a clip in set dyed in my hair color because as I said, I want healthy hair. Healthy hair is happy hair! I know that Victoria Tornegren (big Swedish blogger from Umea) always uses Rapunzel hair extensions and she even recorded a video where she shows how to clip them in and style them. As I can tell from the video, she teases her hair before she clips in the extensions. I'm just not really sure how my hair is gonna react to that. If there are any ladies out there with fine thin hair like me, do you have experience? Please shareeee :-)

Here is Victoria's video on how to clip in Rapunzel hair extensions:

Janni Deler for Nelly.com!

YES, one of my favorite bloggers from Sweden Janni Deler has released her collection for Nelly this week! I knew that she was gonna design for Nelly.com since a few months so I was really curious about what she came up with. And I must say: not bad, not bad at all! I just love the collection, I love the blue, I love everything! Here are some of my favorites:

comfy coat

coat - Amisu (new yorker) / scarf - VILA / shoes - Nelly / jeans - Gina Tricot / bag, necklace - accessorize

SOKKEN.

SOCKS. On every picture you can see my SOCKS..  Next time I should really check the mirror before taking pictures because this is the third time already that it caught my attention after seeing the pictures haha. But I do have a good reason to wear big socks now because it's def cold now. Right now it's a few degrees below 0 and when we walked back from the train station to our apartment we saw Northen lights. We've been so lucky this year because I think I already saw it 7 times since I moved back here.

Yesterday we had a mingle night here with some friends so it was a really nice and cozy night. Today we skyped a little bit with home and after that we went to Nordmaling. On Sunday it's tradition to eat roasted elk so that was super yummy. Almost the whole family was complete today which was nice and me and M had some cuddle time with our nephew (he's already two months old!). Ahhhh, I want a baby toooo haha. Okay, he did puke on me but he is still super adorable haha so I forgive him. Today we could finally give our "birth" present which was: Personalized hand painted Dutch wooden clogs made by my aunt! They really liked the gift so I'm really happy! :)

Side note for non Ducthies: In Holland it's a tradition that a newborn has a "birth card" which is like a postcard that friends and family receive after the baby is born where the name of the baby will be revealed and stuff like that. So together with the birthcard, "birth clogs" are also a thing. They match the theme of the birthcard and is personalized with the baby's name and birthday on it. It's not meant to be worn, but as a memory of the day that you were born. My and my brothers clogs are still hanging on the wall in the living room next to our birthcards (I believe ours had teddy bears on them, super cute)!

I forgot to take a picture of the clogs (stupid me) but my aunt has a facebook profile where she posted tons of pictures of her creations. If you are looking for an original baby gift (could be anything, ideas are welcome) you should definitely check it out! For inspiration and ordering go to the page of Mooi Mooier Mooist (Ineke Rooimans): https://www.facebook.com/MooiMooierMooist/?fref=ts
