Sorry voor de afwezigheid iedereen. Ik ben momenteel heel druk met leuke dingen doen! Afgelopen week was het kerst en dat was super gezellig en gister heb ik mijn broer van het vliegveld opgepikt want hij blijft hier een weekje. Leuk leuk leuk! Vandaag zijn we naar M's lab geweest en hebben we gespeeld met de laser-cutter en de 3D printer. Morgen gaan de boys hier gamen en s'avonds gaan we naar een ijshockey wedstrijd. Mijn broer is een programmeur voor video games dus ze gaan morgen Tomb Raider spelen, een heel bekend spel waar mijn broer aan heeft meegewerkt, super cool! Woensdag staat er curlen op de planning en donderdag is het alweer oudjaarsdag. Vrijdag gaat mijn broer weer naar huis toe en moeten we allemaal weer terug naar het echte leven: werk, school, bleh. Is het gek dat ik daar nog even geen zin in heb?

Apologies for my absence everyone. Currently I'm really busy with doing fun things! Last week it was Christmas which was really nice and yesterday I picked up my brother from the airport because he's staying here this week. Fun fun fun! Today we went to M's lab to play around with the laser-cutter and the 3D printer. Tomorrow the boys are gonna be gaming here and at night we are gonna go to an ice hockey match. My brother is a game-programmer so they will be playing Tomb Raider, a huge game my brother worked on, super cool! Wednesday we're gonna go curling and Thursday is already NYE. Friday my brother will be going back home and we all have to get back to normal life again: work, school, bleh. Is it strange that I really don't feel like doing that now?

Vrolijk kerstfeest iedereen! Gister was het hier in Zweden al kerst en hadden we een heerlijke dag bij M's ouders thuis. We hebben de hele dag in de keuken gestaan en om 3 uur was het tijd om volgens de traditie Kalle Anka (Donald Duck) te kijken met gemberkoekjes en warme wijn met rozijnen. S'avonds staken we de open haard aan en hebben we heerlijk gegeten. Iedereen vond mijn stoofpeertjes heel erg lekker! Bedankt OMA voor de tips en tricks! Vandaag is het tijd voor nog een dinertje maar dan komen er nog meer mensen langs. Vandaag ga ik een makkelijke versie maken van een pasteitje met ragout, namelijk romige champignons in bladerdeeg en M maakt een Sheppard's pie. Dat wordt smullen!


Merry Christmas everyone! Yesterday we already celebrated Christmas here in Sweden and we had a lovely day here at M's parents' house. At 3 we watched Kalle Anka (Donald Duck) according to tradition with some gingerbread cookies and mulled wine with raisins. At night we lid the fire place and we had a fantastic dinner. Everybody liked my stewed sweet pears (in Dutch it's called ''stoofpeertjes") but all thanks to my grandma who provided me with tips and tricks! Today we also have a fancy dinner planned but now more people will join us. I will make a easy version of the Dutch dish "Pasteitje met ragout": Creamy mushrooms in pastry dough and M will make a Sheppard's pie. That's gonna be yums!

holiday series nr 4: santa baby

Dit rompertje heb ik afgelopen zomer gekocht in Stockholm en ik had geen idee dat het zo'n hoog kerstgehalte had. Ik heb 'em afgelopen zomer een paar keer gedragen met slippertjes. Ik ben helemaal verliefd op de knallende kleur en het leek me ook een perfecte kleur voor de zomer. Ik was deze week mijn kast aan het opruimen en kwam deze tegen in mijn doos met zomerkleding. Ik zag het al helemaal voor me: ik in dit rompertje als kerstvrouw hohoho!

Zoals je kunt zien zijn we ook geslaagd voor een kerstboom. Het ruikt nu echt heerlijk fris in huis. Helaas hebben we er nog iets extra bij gekregen: insecten.. We vinden op de meest rare plekken fruitvliegjes en kleine kevertjes. Is dit gevaarlijk voor ons hout? Iemand tips? Anyways, we zijn volop kadotjes aan het verzamelen en morgen is het tijd om de was te doen en onze koffertjes in te pakken. Woensdag vertrekken we naar Nordmaling om kerst met de familie te vieren. Zeker weten dat dit rompertje mee gaat! Zondag ochtend gaan we weer naar huis want dan is het zover: mijn broer komt ons opzoeken en we zullen samen oud en nieuw gaan vieren, kheb der sin an!!!

I bought this romper last summer in Stockholm, having no idea about its high Christmas-caliber. I wore this romper a couple of times last summer paired with some sandals and I was totally in love with the color. At that time the color seemed really summer-worthy. When I was cleaning my closet this week, I found this romper in the box of summer clothes. I totally saw it happening in my head: me in this romper, dressed as mrs. Claus hohoho!

As you can tell from these pictures, we finally found a Christmas tree. It smells nice and fresh in our home now. Unfortunately we got a little extra with it too: insects.. We find fruit flies and little beetles at the most weird places. Is this dangerous for our wood? Tips anyone? Anyways, we are collecting Christmas gifts like crazy and tomorrow it's time for the laundry and packing our bags. We leave Wednesday to go to Nordmaling to celebrate Christmas there with the family. Definitely bringing this romper with me! Sunday morning we go back home because then the time is finally there: My brother is visiting us and we will celebrate NYE together, excited!!!

Wow, yesterday my blog reached 10.000 hits! That's crazy haha!! Thank you to everyone who checks my blog and for the nice and lovely reactions I get regarding this blog. It feels like a real milestone to have reached the 10K views. Every day I get new viewers from all over the world which is actually a bit hard to believe. For example: This week I got viewers from Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, US, Spain, Belgium, Russia and Turkey! Can you believe that? So much love for each and every one of you <3 :).

For me it has become like a routine to write down what's going on in my life and what inspires me etc. and it would be weird not to blog. Of course there are also be people who don't really understand why I put myself on the internet like this, but oh well.. It's my hobby/passion and I make my own decisions so those people can just click the X button and visit other websites that they do like! I'm currently writing a post about the whole internet and social media world, to explain this a bit further because now it sounds a bit harsh.. :p I try to do my own thing and not worry too much about every ones opinion and focus on the positive comments I get; so far it's working out quite well.

holiday series nr 3: neutrals and lace

Ik heb vakantieeee! Vandaag heb ik mijn laatste lab gehad en ik ben een HELE maand vrij! Heeeerlijk! Het is tijd voor nr 3 van de holiday inspired series en dit keer is het een wat warmere outfit. Mijn wijde ABBA broek, een mooie kanten top, parels en rode lippen = helemaal kerst! De lipstick is een super goedkope merkloze lipstick van Flying Tiger maar hij blijft heel lang zitten en de kleur past heel goed bij mijn "kleurenpalet". Rode lipstick staat echt super mooi als je blauwe ogen hebt. Tip: Als je een rode/roze lipstick koopt, koop er eentje met blauwe ondertinten, hierdoor lijken je tanden witter! :-)

I have vacatiooooon! Today I had my last lab and now I'm free for a WHOLE month! Amazing! Now it's time for nr 3 of the holiday inspired series and this time it's a bit of a warmer outfit. My wide ABBA pants, a nice lace top, pearls and red lips = totally Xmas! My lipstick is a brandless lipstick from Flying Tiger but it does stay on super long and the color fits my personal "color pallet". Red lips suit really good if you have blue eyes. Tip: If you're planning on buying a red/pink lipstick, buy one with blue undertones, this makes your teeth look whiter! :-)

Mijn nieuwste aanwinst! Hij moest van ver komen -Nederland, haha- maar gelukkig was het de hoge verzendkosten waard (dit was trouwens niet het enige wat in het pakketje zat, wordt vervolgt)! Ik kan niet wachten tot ik deze kan dragen, maar ik zal even moeten wachten. Het vriest op dit moment heel hard, dus moet ik toch echt iets warmer op mijn hoofd hebben. Hoe staat het ervoor met jullie kerstversieringen? M en ik hebben het appartement deze week kerst-proof gemaakt, het enige wat nog mist is een kerstboom.. Alle bomen die ze hier verkopen zijn echt mega groot en dat gaat een beetje lastig in ons kleine huisje. Nog even verder zoeken dus..

En ohja: Ik heb mijn examen gehaald met nog eens een redelijk hoog cijfer ook! :-) Daar moet op gedronken worden hi ha hoooo!

My newest purchase! It had to come all the way from the Netherlands but it was totally worth the high shipping costs (btw, this was not the only thing in the package, to be continued)! I can't wait to wear it but for now it has to wait. It's currently freezing af right now so I need to put something warmer on my head instead. What's the status on your Christmas decorations? M and me made our apartment Christmas-proof this week but we still don't have a Christmas tree.. All the trees that they sell around here are mega tall and big so that's not really gonna work in our tiny home. The search goes on.. 

And oh: I passed my exam and I actually got a really nice grade! :-) We gotta drink on that!

Found these pictures that were taken before the snow fell down. Oh my, how happy I was when I saw a frozen puddle on the streets. And two days later: snow everywhere!! Unfortunately most of it melted already. What's up with this winter?! I thought this was Sweden? Aren't we suppose to have at least -20 degrees by now?

Holiday series nr 2: Silver snow

Hallo blog! Daar ben ik weer! Pff, ik heb een hectische periode achter de rug met mijn studie. Ik heb mijn examen overleefd en over een weekje ben ik klaar met mijn experimenten op het lab dus dan heb ik lekker vakantie tot halverwege januari. Ondertussen heb ik wel een rapport te schrijven en wat andere klusjes voor school, maar daar heb ik dan alle tijd voor. Dus excuus voor de stilte op mijn blog, maar daar komt binnenkort verandering in! :-)

Vandaag heb ik de foto's van mijn tweede editie van de holiday seriesss (klik hier voor part 1). Zilver, grijs en zwart: perfecte combo waar je nooit mee fout kan gaan. Naja... dit rokje zou je ook naar een 90s party kunnen dragen als je er creatief mee bent, haha. Maar goed, het is maar 1 keer per jaar kerst dus dan mag je ook best lekker uitpakken vind ik. Geven deze foto's je niet een super duper kerstgevoel? Sneeuw en schattige huisjes: de perfecte locatie en het is maar twee stappen lopen van ons appartement. Inmiddels is deze sneeuw alweer gesmolten en is er een nieuwe lading gevallen. Er ligt nu wel minder sneeuw als eerst maar er zal vast meer aankomen!

Morgen gaan M en ik kerst-shoppen, wiehoee. Op ons boodschappenlijstje staat: kerstboom, versieringen en kadotjes voor in onze pakketjes die richting Holland gaan. We hebben geen eigen auto dus we zullen alles met de bus moeten doen. Dat gaat lachen worden met een kerstboom haha! Heeft iedereen al plannen voor kerst en oud en nieuw? Ik kan niet geloven dat het al bijna het einde van het jaar is! Voor mijn gevoel woon ik nog maar net een paar weken weer in Zweden. De tijd vliegt!

Hello blog! I'm back! Pff, I had such a hectic period with my study. I survived my exam and next week I'm done with the experiments on the lab so then I have a break until mid January. I do have a report to write and some other things to take care of, but I will have lots of time of that then. So apologies for the bad updates, but that's gonna change soon! :-)

Today I have some pictures for you of the second part of my holiday seriessss (Click here for part 1). Silver, grey and black: Can't go wrong with that. Well... You could wear this skirt to a 90s party too if you're creative, haha. Oh well, Christmas is only once a year so then it's okay to go a little bit crazy I think. Don't these pictures give you a super duper Christmas feeling? Snow and cute houses: the perfect location and it's only two steps away from our apartment. In the meantime this snow already melted and a new batch of snow has fallen again. There is not as much snow now as there is on the pictures but I'm sure there is more snow on the way!

Tomorrow me and M will go Christmas shopping, woohooo. On our shopping list are the following things: Christmas tree, decorations and some gifts to go in the packages that we will send to Holland. We don't own a car so we are gonna have to do all of this by buss. That's gonna be interesting with a Christmas tree haha! Did everyone made plans for Christmas and NYE already? Can't believe it's almost the end of the year. It feels like I just moved back to Sweden a few weeks ago. Time flies!

Nu hier alles wit van de sneeuw ziet, is de herfst officieel over in Umea! Afgelopen vrijdag werden we wakker in Winter Wonderland en dit weekend heeft het nog eens heel hard gesneeuwd. Ook heeft het vannacht nog eens -20C gevroren dus we kunnen er echt niet meer omheen. Ik ben super blij dat er eindelijk sneeuw ligt want het oogt nu veel lichter buiten. In het noorden hebben we hele korte dagen in de winter; de zon begint al onder te gaan rond een uur of 2! Ik ben al fanatiek bezig met vitamine pilletjes te nemen want ik merk dat zodra het donker is, de energie bij mij ook weg is en ik geen puf meer heb om iets te ondernemen. Hopen maar dat de vitamientjes snel hun werk gaan doen! :-)

Ik ben trouwens best druk met school. Ik heb eind volgende week mijn examen in Tumor Biology en we worden getoetst op het hele boek. Even bikkelen dus! Ook is het bijna Thanksgiving en dan gaan we naar Nordmaling om het met M's familie te vieren. Ik heb geen idee hoe je dat viert trouwens.. Is iedereen in rep en roer net als met kerst of mag ik in mijn spijkerbroek komen? Moeten we naar de kerk? Kopen we kadotjes voor elkaar? Haha, Thanksgiving is helemaal nieuw voor mij dus ik denk dat ik maar even een background check ga doen.

Now that everything here is covered in snow, the fall has officially ended in Umea! Last Friday we woke up in Winter Wonderland and that weekend it snowed even more. Last night is froze about -20C so there is no denying it anymore. I'm super stoked that the snow is finally here because now it looks way lighter outside. Here in the North we have really short days; the sun starts setting around 2 PM! I already started taking vitamin pills because when the sun is down, my energy is also gone and I get nothing done. Let's hope those vitamins start doing there job soon! :-)

I'm pretty busy with school BTW. In the end of next week I have my exam in Tumor Biology and we get questioned about the whole book so there is a lot to study. Also, it's almost Thanksgiving so we are going to M's family in Nordmaling to celebrate it there. I have no clue how you celebrate Thanksgiving though.. Is everyone all dressed up just like with Xmas or can I show up in my jeans? Are you suppose to go to church? Do we buy presents for each other? Haha, Thanksgiving is totally new for me so I guess I need to do a background check.

Post nr 200: Recap of my blog history

Wat gaat de tijd toch snel.. Toen ik 15 was kwam ik voor het eerst in aanraking met mode en beauty blogs en sinds die tijd is mijn passie daarvoor alleen maar toegenomen. Ik wilde zelf ook altijd een blog beginnen en ik was ook heel jaloers op de meiden die zich wel durfden bloot te stellen op het internet. Ze straalden altijd zelfvertrouwen uit en dat inspireerde mij enorm. Met de tijd kwam er bij mij ook meer zelfvertrouwen en vond ik het super leuk om mezelf door middel van kleding en makeup uit te drukken. Op een gegeven moment was ik er overheen, die stomme verlegenheid en onzekerheid. "Gewoon lekker sch**t hebben" dacht ik & Esmee's Beauty Lab was geboren!

Time is flying by so fast.. When I was 15 I first experienced fashion and beauty blogs and since then my passion for that only increased. After that I always wanted to start my own blog because and I was really jealous of the girls who dared to expose themselves on the web. They looked so confident and that really inspired me. With time I also got more confident and I really loved expressing myself through my choice of clothes and makeup. At a certain moment I was over it, over that stupid shyness and low self-esteem. "Just do it, f*** it" is what I thought & Esmee's Beauty Lab was born!



The first time
De aller eerste outfit foto's die ik maakte weet ik nog heel goed. Mijn vriendin Vera en ik gingen naar de bioscoop in Rotterdam om de film "The Heat" te kijken (mijn god, grappigste film OOIT). We hadden van te voren afgesproken om foto's te maken om over te bloggen. Ik weet nog zo goed dat ik me enorm opgelaten voelde toen ik midden op straat ging poseren voor een foto, haha. Gelukkig was het Rotterdam en is daar niks te gek dus niemand leek geshokeerd te zijn van ons, best gelopen. Hier de foto van die aller eerste keer:

I still remember the very first outfit pictures that I took. My friend Vera and me went to the movies in Rotterdam to watch "The Heat" (my god, funniest movie EVER). Beforehand we agreed to take pictures so we could blog about it. I still remember how awkward I felt when I was posing in the middle of the street, haha. Luckily it was in Rotterdam so nothing there is crazy so nobody seemed to be shocked by us. Here is the picture of that very first time:

I think I was 18 or 19 here. I just got my drivers license and we drove to Rotterdam. The freedom felt so good!!

Insperation
Hieronder een foto van de blogger die me het meest inspireerde, Kenza Zouiten. Ze was (en nog steeds is) mijn bestie op het web. Ze schrijft op een manier waardoor je je echt betrokken voelt bij haar dagelijks leven. Ze is heel open en eerlijk over dingen en dat maakt haar zo echt. Haha, heb je haar video's wel eens gezien? Volgens mij zit er een steekje bij haar los soms... :p Anyways, er zou echt een wens in vervulling gaan als ik haar een keer in het echt zou zien (Bucket list dingetje). Ik wil haar zo graag bedanken voor al het zelfvertrouwen dat ze via haar blog naar de kleine verlegen Esmee heeft gestuurd. Ook al kennen we elkaar niet, ze voelt als een echte vriendin. Rara, hoe kom ik toch aan die gekke obsessie voor Zweden? :-) (ehh, ik lijk echt zon tiener meisje met een crush op Harry Styles)

Here a picture of the blogger that inspired me the most, Kenza Zouiten. She was (and still is) my bestie on the web. She writes in a way that you feel really connected to her. She is really open and honest and that is what makes her so real. Haha, have you ever seen some of her video's? I think something might be wrong with her... :p Anyways, it would be a dream coming true if I could ever meet her in real life one day (Bucket list thingy). I would really like to thank her for all that self-lovin' and confidence that she send through her blog to the little shy Esmee. Eventhough we don't know eachother, she feels like a real friend. Guess how I got that weird obsession with Sweden? ;-) (ehh, I really sound like a teengirl with a crush on Harry Styles)

My design through the years

Natuurlijk moest mijn blog er wel netjes en verzorgd uitzien. Ik begon met een simpele opmaak met bloemetjes aan de bovenkant van mijn blog. Ik wist eerlijk gezegd ook niet zo goed hoe alles werkte dus dat was een prima oplossing. ;-) Daarna kreeg ik een beter idee. Ik had de kunstjes een beetje kunnen afkijken bij andere bloggers en ik besloot een echte "banner" te maken. Daarna volgde er nog een, en nog een, en daarna nog een! Hahaha, benieuwd naar hoeveel vooruitgang ik heb geboekt met mijn ontwerp skills? Oordeel zelf! Hier zijn mijn banners:

Of course my blog had to look good and well taken care of. I started out with a simple design with flowers at the top of my page. To be honest, I didn't knew yet how everything worked so for then that seemed like a good solution. ;-) After that I got a better idea. I saw on other blogs how they did their design and I decided to make a real banner. After that first banner came another one, and another one and another one! Hahaha, curious how much progress I made with my desgin skills? I'll let you be the judge of that! Here are my banners:

Mijn liefde voor zwart en wit is niks veranderd door de jaren heen! Hier zijn wat foto's van mijn eerste jaar als ''blogger'' toen ik nog lekker anoniem aan het bloggen was. Alle foto's zijn gemaakt met een digitale camera. Gosh, wat was ik blij dat mijn vrienden voor mijn afscheidsfeestje mij een spiegelreflexcamera kado deden. Echt het beste kado wat ik maar had kunnen wensen, zo dankbaar! En ja, ik mis die zwarte bontjas super erg (mijn moeder vond het een Nel-Veerkampje haha, want bontjasjes waren toen nog niet zo in).

After all these years my love for black and white hasn't changed a thing! Here are some pictures of my first year as a "blogger" when I still blogged anonymous. All these pictures were taken with a simple digital camera. Gosh, I was so happy when my friends gave me a real camera at my goodbye-party. Really the best present I could have wished for at that moment, I'm so thankful! And yes, I miss my black faux fur (my mom didn't like it so much haha, because faux furs weren't realling a thing back then).

Pride
Op welke post ben ik het meest trots? Hmm... Eigenlijk op elke post! Elke keer weer word ik weer een beetje beter en professioneler. Ook ben ik blij dat ik vaak oefen met mijn camera en dat ik het steeds meer onder de knie krijg want mooie foto's zijn key voor een goede post. Ik moet zeggen dat ik nog steeds super blij ben met de foto's die mijn vriendin Tessa genomen heeft (check haar portfolio hier). Toen ik nog in Nederland woonde was M er natuurlijk niet dus had ik niet echt een vast iemand die regelmatig foto's kon maken dus Tessie schoot te hulp en het was echt een super leuke middag! Which post am I the most proud of? Hmm.. On each post actually! Everytime I get a little bit better and professional. I'm glad that all my practice is paying off now bit by bit and that I get nice picturees because good pictures are key. I must say that I'm still super happy with the pictures that my friend Tessa took of me (check her portfolio here). When I still lived in the Netherlands M wasn't there of course so I didn't had anyone to regularly take pictures of me. So Tessie helped me out and it was so much fun! Miss u Tes! Ik moet toegeven dat M er ook wat van kan! Ik ben echt super blij dat hij het leuk vindt om mij, zijn soms zeurende vriendin, wilt helpen. De foto's van toen we samen naar de Kinderdijk gingen waren bijvoorbeeld echt super mooi geworden. Klik hier om de hele blogpost te bekijken.

Most memorable moments on the blog
Sinds ik mijn blog ben begonnen heb ik heel wat leuke dingen meegemaakt. Als ik een post moest kiezen die veel indruk heeft achter gelaten bij mij, dan is dat deze (klik). Niet omdat de foto's nou zo mooi waren of omdat het een hoog glamour gehalte had, maar omdat ik en mijn vriendin Roxan iets gingen doen wat ver buiten onze comfort zone lag. In deze post vertelde ik over mijn besluit om in het buitenland te gaan studeren voor een half jaar. Jep, in Zweden. Nou en ik kan je vertellen, dat half jaartje heeft mijn leven veranderd haha! Heel veel goede dingen zijn er uit voortgekomen en ik ben super blij dat ik die stap heb genomen, maar ik had het niet kunnen doen zonder mijn sister from another mister Roxie. <3

Since I started my blog I experienced quite some fun stuff. If I would have to pick a post that really meant a lot for me at that time, than it is this one (click). Not because the pictures were so nice or it was a super glamorous post, but because me and my friend Roxan were about to do something far outside our comfort zone. In this post I announced that we were gonna study abroad for half a year. Yep, in Sweden. Well I can tell you, that half a year sure changed my life haha! A lot of good things came from this experience and I'm super happy that I took the big step, but I couldn't have done it without my sister from another mister Roxie. <3

Nou, dat was het dan! Ik hoop dat jullie de terugblik leuk vonden om te lezen. Ik heb met veel plezier deze post geschreven. Zonder dat je het beseft verzamel je toch heel veel waardevolle herinneringen en met het bekijken van oude foto's komt dat allemaal weer boven. Ik ben benieuwd welke herinneringen ik nog ga maken in de toekomst!
